Biographical or historical data
The Jarratt family of Petersburg traces back to Richard Jarratt (b. ca. 1779), one of the earliest known free black inhabitants of Pocahontas Island, and a businessman in the fishing and carrying trade. With wife Elizabeth, Jarratt had five children: Alexander, John, Thomas, William, and daughter Jane. The family home, located at 808-810 Logan Street, still stands today, the oldest brick structure on Pocahontas Island. It is said to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad at one point. Descendants of the family still live in Petersburg.
