Biographical or historical data
John B. Cooper was born in 1842 in Newport, Sullivan County, New Hampshire. When the Civil War began, he enlisted in Company D, 1st New Hampshire Infantry in April 1861. He was mustered out when his term expired in August 1861. Cooper began recruiting what became Company K, 9th New Hampshire Regiment and became its captain 10 August 1862. He was wounded at the battle of Antietam and returned from his wounds just in time to fight at the battle of Fredericksburg. Cooper remained with his regiment through the rest of the war. After the war ended, he worked for a year (1870) as a blacksmith at a farm in Fauquier County, Virginia. Cooper was a selectman, state representative, member of the state constitutional convention, and state senator. He served as door keeper of the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 1875-6. He was postmaster of Newport from 1877 to 1881 and again around 1910. He was an executive member of the Newport Water Works and superintended the laying of pipes and construction of the resevoir. He married Mary O. Moody (b. ca. 1840) in August 1862, and they had one son. Cooper died between 1910 and 1920.
