Biographical or historical data
John Clopton was born 7 February 1756 in New Kent County, Virginia, to William Clopton and Elizabeth Dorrall Ford Jones Clopton. John Clopton attended the College of Philadelphia. He served in the Pennsylvania militia and artillery during the American Revolution and was wounded at the battle of Brandywine. Clopton returned to New Kent County to practice law and served in the House of Delegates from 1789 to 1791. Clopton was a U.S. Congressman from 1795 to 1799 and from 1803 to 1816. Clopton married Sarah Bacon 15 May 1784 and they had five children. Clopton died either 11 or 12 September 1816 in New Kent County.
