Biographical or historical data
John E. Laughton, Jr. was born in Richmond, Virginia on 30 March 1844. He served as a captain in the 12th Virginia Infantry during the Civil War, and lost an arm at the Battle of the Crater on 30 June 1864. After the war, Laughton returned to Richmond and was employed as an auctioneer. He was a commander of the R. E. Lee Camp, Confederate Veterans, and was instrumental in the formation of the portrait collection at the Virginia Historical Society. Laughton later moved to Washington, D.C. and died there on 5 April 1913. He was buried in Shockoe Cemetery in Richmond.
