Diaries, 1837-1867, of John Walker (1785-1867) of King and Queen County, Virginia, consisting of five volumes and loose papers containing entries on agriculture, specifically cotton, corn, and wheat; livestock; weather observations; religion, specifically Methodism; local elections; folk cures, remedies, and recipes; fisheries; fences and fencing; mills and milling; and the Civil War in King and Queen County. Walker entered prayers, accounts, genealogical information, and complaints about fox hunters crossing his plantation. He also transcribed letters which he had written. Volume 2 covers 1 April 1837-23 November 1844; volume 3 covers 7 December 1844-1 March 1851; volume 4 covers 4 March 1851-15 August 1857; volume 5 covers 15 August 1857-10 June 1860; volume 6 covers 16 June 1860-31 December 1864; and loose papers cover 1865-1867, and include a photograph of a home, possibly "Chatham Hill" in King and Queen County. Volume 1 of the diaries is located at the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina. Excerpts from these volumes were published in THE BULLETIN OF THE KING & QUEEN COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, issues 17, 18, and 19

John Walker was born 15 August 1785 at "Locust Grove" in King and Queen County, Virginia, to Humphrey Walker (1762-1820) and Frances Temple Walker (ca. 1760-1824). John Walker moved to Tennessee in the 1810s, before returning to King and Queen County in 1819. He became a successful planter, inheriting "Chatham Hill" from his mother's family. After the death of a brother, he also became owner of "Locust Grove." Walker married Margaret Shepherd (1804-1886), and they had 7 children. John Walker died 27 February 1867.
