John Webb was born 20 March 1794 in Essex County, Virginia, to Francis Webb (1759-1811) and Frances Walker Webb (1764-1808). John Webb moved to Georgia in 1808 where his father had earlier relocated. Webb worked as a plantation manager before purchasing his own farm and also becoming involved in a mercantile venture and in a mill. Webb eventually settled in Newton County, Georgia. He married Nancy Ann Thomason (1799-1873) on 29 March 1815) and they had eleven children, eight of whom survived to adulthood.
