Biographical or historical data
Joseph Christian was born 10 July 1828 in Middlesex County, Virginia, to Richard Allen Christian (d. 1862) and Elizabeth Robinson Steptoe Christian (d. 1875). He was educated by tutors and attended Columbian College in Washington D.C. where he earned his A.B. in 1847. Christian also earned a master's degree in 1853 and received an honorary LL.D. in 1872. He read law in Middlesex County and Staunton, Virginia, and was admitted to the bar in 1849. He began practicing law in Middlesex County. In 1859 Christian was elected to represent Middlesex, Gloucester, and Mathews Counties in the Virginia State Senate. In 1866 he was elected judge of the Virginia 6th circuit court, but was removed from his position in 1869 by a federal law which prohibited former active supporters of the Confederacy from positions in government. He moved to Richmond, Virginia, that same year. When this restriction was removed in 1870, Christian was elected a judge on the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. When his term expired in 1882, he was not reelected because the Readjusters controlled the Virginia legislature. He returned to his law practice in Richmond. Christian represented the city in the House of Delegates in the 1883-1884 session. Christian married Maria Augusta Healy in June 1850, and they had four children. Christian died 29 May 1905 in Richmond and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery.
