Biographical or historical data
Joseph Henry Pendleton was born in Louisa County, Virginia 16 January 1827. He attended Bethany College and became a lawyer. When the Civil War began, Pendleton became a major in the 23rd Virginia Infantry. Wounded in the head during the Laurel Hill campaign in the summer of 1861, Pendleton resigned 14 September 1861. By March of 1862, he was again in service, this time as quartermaster for William Booth Taliaferro's (1822-1898) brigade in the Shenandoah Valley. Pendleton later served as quartermaster for Raleigh Colston's (1825-1896) brigade early in 1863 and as quartermaster at Ivor Station. Pendleton represented Ohio County in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1863 to 1865. After the war ended, he returned to Wheeling, West Virginia, and practiced law. Pendleton married Margaret Campbell Ewing in 1848. Pendleton died in Wheeling, West Virginia, 2 February 1881.
