Ruffner's novel was published in the SOUVENIR in 1828. An expanded version appeared in the SOUTHERN LITERARY MESSENGER in 1839. This novel was followed by its sequel, SECLUSAVAL

Biographical or historical data
Henry Ruffner was born 16 January 1790 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, to David Ruffner (1767-1843) and Lydia Ann Brumbach Ruffner (1766-1852). He received an AB from Washington College. A Presbyterian minister, Ruffner taught at Washington College from 1819 to 1830, and from 1836 to 1848. He also served as president of Washington College from 1836 to 1848. After resigning as president of the college, he moved to Kanawha County, (West) Virginia. Ruffner was a proponent of public education and an opponent of slavery, advocating colonization. He married Sarah Montgomery Lyle (1787-1849) 31 March 1819, and they had 4 children including William Henry Ruffner (1824-1908). He married second, Laura Jane Kirby 20 November 1849. Ruffner died 16 December 1861 in Kanawha County, West Virginia.
