The 50,212 acres on the Shenandoah River had been owned by Landon Carter, George Carter, Carter Burwell, Robert Burwell, Carter Page, Robin Page, Robert Carter Nicholas, Robert Carter, Jr. (son of John Carter), Benjamin Harrison, Jr., and Robert Carter, Jr. (son of Robert Carter, Jr.). Copies of the wills of George Mason, Mrs. Sarah Mason, Stephen Gray, and a clause from the will of Thomas Ballard, all of Stafford County, are included. Also includes records from the General Court of Virginia concerning these lands. The documents are transcribed in various hands. An index preceeds the folio pages

Biographical or historical data
John Mercer was born 6 February 1704 in Dublin, Ireland, to John Mercer (1670-1717) and Grace Fenton (1680-1763). He emigrated to Virginia in 1720 and settled in Stafford County, establishing his plantation, Marlborough. Mercer was a lawyer, large land owner, and secretary of the Ohio Company. He married first Catherine Mason (1707-1750) 10 June 1725 and they had ten children. He married second Ann Roy (d. 1770) 10 November 1750, and they had nine children. Mercer died 14 October 1768 at Marlborough in Stafford County.
