Biographical or historical data
Lanson S. Ferris was born 4 February 1833 in Chenango County, New York, to Philetus Philo Ferris (1797-1851) and Harriet Bentley Farris (1802-1855). He enlisted in Company D, 44th New York Infantry, 14 September 1861 and mustered in on 19 September. Ferris was promoted to corporal in August 1862 and to sergeant 27 November 1862. Reenlisting 28 December 1863, Ferris was wounded at Spotsylvania Court House. Promoted to 1st Sergeant on 27 July 1864, he transferred to Company B, 23 September 1864. Ferris transferred to Company E, 146th New York Infantry on 11 October 1864. He was commissioned a first lieutenant , but not mustered. Ferris was discharged 3 November 1864. He returned to Chenango County and worked as a farm laborer. Ferris was married first to Ellen A. Gage (1839-1859) and was married a second time. He had two sons by this second marriage. Ferris died in Chenango County 8 December 1915 and was buried in Sunset Hill Cemetery in Chenango County.
