Biographical or historical data
James Ewell Brown Stuart was born 6 February 1833 at "Laurel Hill" in Patrick County, Virginia, to Archibald Stuart (1795-1855) and Elizabeth Letcher Stuart. He attended Emory and Henry College, then received an appointment to the United States Military Academy in 1850. Graduating in 1855, Stuart was commissioned a lieutenant in the United States Cavalry, serving in Texas and Kansas. When the Civil War began, Stuart resigned his commission in the U.S. army and received a commission as a captain of cavalry in the Confederate army. He was promoted to brigadier-general and then major general, leading the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia until mortally wounded at the battle of Yellow Tavern near Richmond, Virginia, on 11 May 1864. Stuart died the next day and was interred in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. Stuart married Flora Cooke (1836-1923) 14 November 1855, and they had three children.
