Typescript of letter, 11 January 1857, from William B. Owen (b. 1824) of Coffey County, Kansas, to his brother Harvey Owen (b. 1838) of McLean County, Illinois, describing his journey from Missouri to Kansas in the dead ow winter. Owen comments on the snow and cold weather, the prices of food in Coffey County, and some of the difficulties caused by the fighting in Kansas the previous year. He also asks his brother to ship his belongings and suggests he come to Kansas as soon as possible. An explanatory note with some genealogical information precedes the letter
