Lewis Sutton was born on 9 May 1781 in Northumberland County, Virginia. He was the son of James Sutton and Elizabeth Coppage. The family later settled in Calvert County, Maryland. Sutton joined the Methodist Church and preached in Calvert and Anne Arundel Counties. He was postmaster at Huntington. Sutton also operated in dry goods business in Baltimore for a short time. He married Martha Dorsey in 1802 in Anne Arundel County. They had twelve children.
