John Tayloe (1687-1747) established his family in Richmond County, Virginia. He was a prominent member of the county's social elite. He and his wife Elizabeth Gwyn Lyde Tayloe (1692-1745) had four children, including John Tayloe (1721-1779). John Tayloe II built the Tayloe family home Mount Airy. He served on the Colonial Council under British rule and on the reformed Council of State in the first days of Virginia's independence.
