Biographical or historical data
Walter King Cole was born about 1745 in Virginia, and was the son of Walter King. Cole attended the College of William and Mary from 1766 to 1769 and became a physician. In the American Revolution, Cole served as a surgeon in the Virginia Navy and then in the 1st Virginia State Regiment. In 1779 he learned that the Virginia legislature was going to confiscate property owned by former inhabitants who had returned to Great Britain. His father Walter King had returned to England years before. Cole signed on to serve as the surgeon aboard the Fanny, a ship headed to France. It was captured by the British Navy and Cole eventually ended up in England. There his father Walter King deeded him the King properties in Amherst and Henry Counties, Virginia. Cole was able to return to Virginia by 1780 and continue his work as a surgeon for Virginia troops. After the Revolution ended, Cole moved to Henry County where he continued his medical practice. Cole married Sally Mitchell in November 1783, and they had at least one child. Cole died in Henry County 7 February 1794.
