Transcripts of records, 1669-1797, of the Alexander family of Stafford and Fairfax Counties, Virginia, in one bound and indexed volume consisting of: agreements, bonds, decrees, deeds, depositions, correspondence, judicial records, land grants, plats and wills. Most of the records deal with a land grant originally given to Robert Howson (d. 1697) of Westmoreland County, Virginia, in 1669 and later purchased by John Alexander (d. 1677) of Stafford County, Virginia, and were recorded as part of cases heard in Stafford County court, Fairfax County court, Virginia General Court, and Virginia District Court (Dumfries District). This land grant is now part of Alexandria and Arlington County, Virginia. Volume includes copies of the following Stafford County wills which were recorded in will books no longer extant: John Alexander, 1677; Robert Alexander, 1703; Robert Alexander 1735, Gerard Alexander, 1761, and John Alexander, 1768. Biographical or historical data
John Alexander arrived in Virginia by 1653 from London, England. Alexander accumulated property in the Northern Neck of Virginia, including land that was originally a land grant to Robert Howson (d. ca. 1697) a Welsh ship captain. Alexander and his wife Elizabeth had at least 5 children, including Robert Alexander. Robert Alexander was born about 1635 in England and came to Virginia with his father and mother. Like his father, Alexander became a large property holder in the Northern Neck. He died early in 1704. His son, Robert Alexander, was born about 1688 and married Anne Fowke (1689/90-1739) about 1709, and they had 5 children. Robert Alexander died 5 October 1735. Alexander's oldest daughter Parthenia (b. 1709) married 1st Dade Massey (1708-1735) and had 2 children, and married 2nd Townshend Dade (1707-1781), and they had 7 children. His son, John Alexander (1711-1764) had 12 children, including Charles Alexander (1737-1806).
