Biographical or historical data
Lorenzo Dow Miles was born 16 September 1838 in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, to Orrin and Eunice Clark Miles. He attended local schools. Miles enlisted in Company E, 3rd Vermont Infantry and was assigned on special service to Battery F, U.S. Regulars until 1863 when he returned to the 3rd Vermont. Miles saw action at all major engagements between the Peninsula campaign and the siege of Petersburg, except for the Seven Days' battles. Miles was honorably discharged 27 July 1864. He settled down as a farmer in Albany, Vermont in 1865. He was appointed deputy sheriff of Orleans County, Vermont in 1874, serving until he became sheriff ten years later. Miles married Harriet E. Lord 14 March 1865 and they had three children. Miles died in Boston, Massachusetts, 5 October 1923, and was buried in Orleans County.
