Biographical or historical data
John Marshall, born 24 Sept. 1755 in Germantown (Fauquier County), Virginia, served in the Virginia House of Delegates (1782-1790, 1795-1796), as attorney general (1794-1795), Congressman (1799-1800), chief justice of the U.S. (1801-1835), and principal founder of judicial review and of the American system of constitutional law. He married Mary Willis Ambler (1766-1831) on 3 January 1783 and died in office on 6 July 1835.
