Biographical or historical data
Thomas Hume was born 16 March 1812 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. After the death of his father, Hume grew up in Petersburg, Virginia. He attended the Virginia Baptist Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. Hume received a call to become the pastor of the Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1832, and began his tenure at what would become Court Street Baptist Church 17 March 1833. Hume also served at times 4th Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth and First Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia. Briefly during the Civil War, Hume left Portsmouth after the Union occupation for Petersburg. He returned after the war. Hume married first Mary Anne Gregory (1814-1862) in 1835, and they had eight children. He married second Lizzie Carter Braxton (1838-1869) in 1867, and they had one child. Hume died 16 March 1875.
