Letters, 1944-1945, written to and from Marvin P. Sebrell (1877-1946) while he served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. All but one were written during January-March 1944. Topics of the earlier letters include proposed legislation on the use of prison labor for farm work, forest fire laws and related taxes, funds for new buildings at the University of Virginia, the sale of beer and wine on Sundays, and an amendment to the Franklin, Virginia, town charter. The last letter, 28 March 1945, was written by Sebrell to E. N. Wilkinson, town manager of Franklin, and gives news of the passage of a piece of legislation relevant to town officials and employees. Most of the letters are very brief in nature

Biographical or historical data
Marvin Pretlow Sebrell was born on 15 February 1877 in Southampton County, Virginia, the son of William N. (b. 1846) and Elizabeth Sebrell. He was educated at Randolph-Macon Academy, Draughon Business College (?), and Randolph-Macon College. Although he spent part of his adult life living in New York City, Sebrell eventually returned to his home county. A peanut manufacturer by trade, he also spent the last years of his life serving in the Virginia House of Delegates, 1940-1946. Sebrell died on 22 January 1946. He is buried in Courtland, Southampton County.
