Biographical or historical data
Matthew Fontaine Maury was the son of Richard Launcelot Maury (1840-1907) and Susan Gatewood Crutchfield (1842-1911). He attended the University of Virginia, and graduated in 1886. Afterwards, he practiced law in Glasgow, Virginia, and then with his father in Richmond in the firm Maury and Maury. He married Sophie Clapham Bruce (1864-1946). Around 1905, Maury's health began to fail, and he spent much of his time around Asheville, North Carolina in the hopes of recuperating, but died there on 8 January 1908. He is buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.
