Biographical or historical data
The Norwood Literary Society was organized in November 1866 in the Norwood School, which was established by William D. Cabell as a male preparatory school for the University of Virginia, and opened for classes in the fall of 1865. The Norwood School, located in Nelson County, Virginia, was known as the Norwood High School in 1873-1876 and as the Norwood High School and College, beginning in 1877. The society was established to offer support "for the practice of debate and declamation, and for general culture." There was onother literary society in the school called the Randolph Literary Society.
