Richmond, Virginia, was laid out in 1737 on the falls of the James River in Henrico County by William Byrd II and William Mayo. Established in 1742, it was designated the capital of the state in 1779. Incorporated as a town in 1782 and as a city in 1842, it served as the capital of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865. In 1910 the town of Manchester, formerly in Chesterfield County was annexed in 1970. It adjoins Henrico County on the northwest and northeast and Chesterfield County on the southwest and southeast.
