Soon after the Virginia Colony was brought under royal control, King Charles I commissioned Captain John Harvey, John Pory, Abraham Peirsey, and Samuel Mathews "to make an exact information of the present state of the Plantation in divers points." The aforementioned men arrived on board the Southampton on 4 March 1623/24.
