Vogt, Baltimore, Maryland, to Arthur E. Wilbourn of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields Memorial Commission sending these items to Wilbourn; and a letter, 1 December 1931, from Wilbourn to H. R. McIlwaine, Virginia State Librarian, passing these items to the Virginia State Library. The letter fragments and roster were picked up by Vogt/Meyers at Petersburg, Virginia, during the Civil War

Biographical or historical data
John Vogt was born about 1847 in Bavaria and immigrated to the United States about 1853, settling in Baltimore, Maryland. During the Civil War, he changed his name to John Meyers and enlisted in Company H, 4th Maryland Infantry 7 June 1862, even though he was under age. Vogt/Meyers served as a musician throughout the war, and was mustered out 31 May 1865. After the war he worked in a cotton factory. Vogt and his wife Mary had at least three children, including Jesse Sylvester Vogt (b. 1875).
