Biographical or historical data
  • In 1909, William Day sent Molly Waddy then living in Northumberland County near Smith Point Light House two letters. The correspondence described to Mrs. Waddy how her son, an American sailor named Alexander, had been taken from his ship and impressed into the British navy. Although Alexander later managed to escape from British service, he died before reaching the United States.
  • These were used as an exhibit in a chancery suit instituted several years later by Alexander's sister. In order to claim her brother's portion of an inheritance, Margaret C. Hudnall produced the two letters to prove Alexander had died.
  • Chancery Causes are cases of equity. According to Black's Law Dictionary they are "administered according to fairness as contrasted with the strictly formulated rules of common law." A judge, not a jury, determines the outcome of the case.
  • Northumberland County probably was named for the English county. It was formed about 1645 from the district of Chickacoan, the early-seventeenth-century name for the region between the Potomac and the Rappahannock rivers.
