Notebook, 1820-1826, containing notes and newspaper clippings concerning cases tried in the superior courts of various counties which were then appealed to the General Court of Virginia. The appeals were on novel or fine points of law and include the judgment of the General Court. Handwritten notes concern cases from the superior courts of Botetourt (attempted rape), Brunswick (assault), Fauquier (fraudulent command of the county militia), Lunenburg (attempted murder), Ohio (West Virginia) (murder), and Washington (incestuous marriage) Counties, Virginia, and the county court of Stafford County (card playing), Virginia, which were then appealed to the General Court, and concern cases involving Jerry Mann (a slave), Alexander Goode, William R. Smith, Jacob Lester, Lawrence Linton, Nancy Tankersly, and Thomas P. Harrison. Newspaper clippings for other cases include the superior courts of Augusta (forgery), Culpeper (promissory note for bail), and Henrico (embezzlement) Counties, among others, and involving Nathan Altoo, Richard and Robert Norris, and Alexander Lithgow. Also includes clippings concerning the case of State Treasurer John Preston. Volume also contains a list of criminal cases decided in the Henrico County Superior Court. The donor, Frances Ellyson, wrote her birthday (25 September 1865) and her sister Ellie's (2 July 1867) on blank pages when she was a child, and practiced her handwriting
