Biographical or historical data
James Herbert Ryan was born in Petersburg, Virginia on 1 February 1931. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1955. Ryan served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars with the United States Army, and retired at the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was the president of the Historic Petersburg Foundation and the Rotary Club of Petersburg.
