Biographical or historical data
  • Charles M. Robinson (Charles Morrison) was born on 3 March 1867 to architect James T. Robinson and Elizabeth Crockett of Loudoun County, Virginia. Robinson received his formal architectural education under the direction of D. S. Hopkinds of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and John K. Peebles of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the early 1900s, Robinson set up professional offices in Richmond, Virginia. Members of his firm included Charles Custer Robinson, Benjamin A. Ruffin, and J. Banford Wallord. The firm disbanded after Robinson’s death on 20 August of 1932. He died of complications from surgery.
  • Much of Robinson’s work can be found at many college and university buildings in Virginia, including, Bridgewater College, Eastern College, James Madison University, Radford University, University of Richmond, University of Mary Washington, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia State University, and Washington and Lee University. One of the Robinson’s largest accomplishments took place upon becoming the College Architect for the College of William and Mary where he designed over sixty pieces of work from 1921 to 1931. Although a lot of Robinson’s work is represented at institutions of higher education, Robinson and his firm designed public works and many private structures in Richmond. Some of these include: Landmark Theatre (formerly the Mosque), Stuart Circle Hospital, Miller and Rhodes building, Times-Dispatch building, and a Sunday school at Ginter Park Methodist Church.
