Summary
Autograph book, 1918-1922, of Olive Lee Burke (b. ca. 1907), signed by family members in Staunton, Virginia, and fellow students at Hartshorn Memorial College in Richmond, Virginia. The school, which eventually became part of Virginia Union University, was said to be the first African American women's college. Inscriptions are often in the form of poems, focusing on topics such as friendship, general life advice, and the desire to be remembered after school has ended. Many of the young women signing the book gave addresses, showing that students came from all around Virginia as well as Delaware, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Also included are miscellaneous enclosures, 1920-1930 and undated, consisting of a 1928 letter to Burke at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina; a Valentine's Day card; two handwritten copies of a poem or song entitled "Unity Forever;" a 1920 Acca Temple death announcement for Louis P. Ecker; and an envelope promoting a 1930 "calendar rally" at Augusta Street M. E. Church (town unspecified)
