Biographical or historical data
George Stoneman was born in Busti, New York, 22 August 1822. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1846. After graduation, he served in the army and was stationed in Texas when the Civil War began. He escaped North and served in the Union army. Stoneman commanded cavalry in the Army of the Potomac under George McClellan and Joe Hooker, and commanded the 3rd Corps under Ambrose Burnside. Stoneman commanded the cavalry of the Army of the Ohio in the western theater and was captured during the Atlanta Campaign. Exchanged Stoneman returned to the cavalry and led raids in Southwest Virginia. After the Civil War, Stoneman held various posts in the army until relieved of command in 1871. He moved to California and later served as governor from 1882 to 1886. Stoneman married Mary Oliver Hardisty 22 November 1861, and they had four children. Stoneman died in Buffalo, New York, 5 September 1894.
