Papers, 1851-1901, of the Norvell family of Charlotte County and Richmond, Virginia, consisting of Bible records, correspondence, newsletters, receipts, tax records, verses, and miscellaneous items. Correspondence consists of drafts of letters, 1851, from William Dabney Norvell (1822-1903) to his fiancee Sarah "Sallie" Watkins Hundley of Charlotte County and to his cousin Nannie discussing personal, family, and social news, including his upcoming marriage to Sallie Hundley, and letters include two drafts of a 14 March 1851 letter. Papers also contain a receipt, 30 September 1871, from Maria L. Carrington of Richmond to William D. Norvell as trustee for S. W. Norvell for payment for schooling of Lizzie Norvell; tax receipts, 1882 and 1885, to William D. Norvell from the treasurer of Charlotte County for payment of taxes; Manuscript newsletter, 6 February 1901, entitled the SMITHVILLE GOSSIPER containing social and family news from Charlotte County; Bible records containing birth, death, and marriage records for the family of Edmund Butler Norvell (1789-1839); some childrens' verses; and a paper with names and numbers

Biographical or historical data
William Dabney Norvell was born 6 May 1822 to Edmund Butler Norvell (1789-1830) and Saluda Morriss Norvell (1798-1834). He became a member of Hundley, Norvell, and Jones, grocers and merchants, in Richmond, Virginia. He returned to live in Charlotte County, Virginia, where he became a prosperous farmer and a prominent citizen. Norvell married Sarah (Sallie) Watkins Hundley 8 January 1852, and they had twelve children. Norvell died in Charlotte County 6 February 1903.
