  • The George Washington Papers are divided into seven series, including 1) Exercise books, 1741-1799, containing exercise books, 1741-47/8; diaries, 1748-1799; and surveys, 1749-1752;
  • 2) Letterbooks, 1754-1799, containing copies of Washington's correspondence, including general correspondence, correspondence with Congress, the Departments of State, Treasury, and War, with civic, fraternal, and religious groups, as well as a "Journal of the Proceedings of the President," 1793-1797;
  • 3) Varick Transcripts, 1775-1783, which are transcripts of Washington's Revolutionary War correspondence with the Continental Congress, Continental and State military personnel, civil officials and citizens, foreign officers and subjects of foreign nations, enemy officers and British subjects, as well as Continental Army Council proceedings, General Orders, and personal correspondence;
  • 4) General Correspondence, 1697-1799, including letters sent and received by Washington, drafts of letters, military returns, and other documents;
  • 5) Financial Papers, 1750-1796, including accounts and financial records of Mount Vernon, colonial Virginia militia, Washington's Revolutionary War expenses, and Society of the Cincinnati traveling expenses;
  • 6) Military Papers, 1755-1798, including orderly books and other military records relating to the colonial Virginia militia and the Revolutionary Army, records of enemy deserters, and Continental Army officers' commissions, captured British orderly books, and miscellaneous records, including sundry records relating to the Revolutionary War and later period, such as account books of the quartermaster of Yorktown, proceedings of a trial held by the British in New York in 1782, and records compiled by several unknown soldiers;
  • 7) Applications, 1789-1796, containing applications for office during Washington's administration;
  • 8) Miscellaneous Papers, ca. 1775-1799, including recipients' copies of some Washington letters, certificates of Washington's degrees and honors, surveys, notes, extracts, and forms
