Julius John Lankes was born 31 August 1884 in Buffalo, New York. He studied art at the Albright Art School in Buffalo from 1908 to 1909, and at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston, Massachusetts, from 1912 to 1913. In 1917, Lankes became interested in wood cuts, and taught himself, becoming one of the premier wood cut artists in the United States. Lankes moved to Hilton Village, Newport News, Virginia, in 1925, where he produced scenes of tidewater Virginia. At the urging of his friend Robert Frost (1874-1963) for whom he did some illustrations, Lankes became visiting professor at Wells College in Aurora, New York, in 1932 and stayed until 1939. In 1954, he was at the National Academy of Design. Lankes married Edee Bartlett in 1915, and they had four children. Lankes died in Durham, North Carolina, 20 April 1960.
