Papers, 1821-1854, of the Cockerill family of Madison County, Virginia, consisting of account books, accounts, advertisements, bonds, executor's notices, letters, memorandums, miscellaneous financial notes, notes, promissory notes, receipts, reports, terms of sale of estate, and wills. Promissory notes, accounts, notes, receipts, and bonds are to and from Thompson Cockerill regarding his personal finances, payment of taxes, and sale of slaves, livestock, crops, and farm equipment. Also papers relating to the business Willis and Cockerill of which he was a partner. The will, dated 21 November 1837 and recorded 28 December 1837, of Thompson Cockerill is included. Advertisments, accounts, executor's notice, receipts, memorandum, terms of sale, and miscellaneous notes relate to the handling of Cockerill's estate by his executor Charles T. Graves. Collection contains three letters: one, dated 28 April 1838, from George W. Spotswood of Springfield, Illinois, to Charles T. Graves of Orange County, Virginia, concerning the death of Cockerill and a debt owed to him by Spotswood; one, dated 23 June 1852, from Leonard H. Maury of Barren County, Kentucky, to Mary B. T. Campbell of Orange County, Virginia, concerning family news and a land dispute; and one, dated 20 January 1854, from Maury to Frederick W. Campbell of Orange County, concerning family news and a land dispute. The land dispute discussed in Maury's letters to the Cambells (his wife's brother and sister) concern a bounty warrant claim for the Campbells' father for his service in the Revolutionary War

Biographical or historical data
Thompson Cockerill was a businessman and farmer in Madison County, Virginia. He and his wife had seven children. Cockerill died between 21 November 1837, when he wrote his will, and 28 December 1837, when it was recorded in the Madison County Court.
