Summary
Papers, 1799-1885, of the Grimsley family of Culpeper County, Virginia. The majority of these items consist of correspondence between Daniel A. Grimsley and Miss Bettie Browning, 1861-1865 concerning camp life, troop movements, and battles. Includes two letters from July 1861 regarding the 1st battle of Bull Run (Va.). Grimsley enlisted in Company B, Sixth Regiment of Virginia Cavalry, 22 April 1861, and served through the war. The collection also contains an advertisement from Schoolfield and Watson (Danville, Va.) chewing tobacco, currency, poetry, deeds for land in Culpeper and Orange Counties, Virginia, and miscellaneous envelopes. Also included is a small notebook containing several pages of memoranda relevant to school tuition and numerous comments on law

Biographical or historical data
The Grimsley family was from Culpeper and Rappahannock Counties, Virginia. Daniel Amon Grimsley (1840-1910), served as a major with the 6th Virginia Cavalry, Company B, 1861-1865. After the war he was a Culpeper County lawyer and circuit judge in the Virginia legislature. Daniel married his cousin Bettie A. Browning (b. 1846) in Culpepper County, Virginia, on 18 September 1866.
