Robert Leslie was born in Ayr, Scotland on 7 January 1794. He lived in Glasgow and was apprenticed to a warehouse merchant where he was employed as a bookkeeping clerk. Afterwards, he was employed by his cousin James Dunlop in the firm James and John Dunlop Company of London. In 1817, Leslie came to the United States, and established himself in the mercantile business in Petersburg, Virginia. He continued to do business with his old firm in London. Leslie became a prominent shipper of cotton and tobacco, and also a manufacturer of tobacco, and also served as the Dunlop's confidential agent in America. He retired in 1854, but his business was continued by his nephews Robert L. Watson and John McGill, and he continued an interest in it. Robert Leslie died in Petersburg on 22 October 1878 and is buried in Blandford Cemetery.
