Papers, 1821-1865, of the Miller family of Gloucester County, Virginia, consisting of accounts, affidavits, contracts, judicial records, letters, promissory notes, receipts and tax records. Accounts and receipts of Mary S. Miller and the Miller family with merchants for dry-goods and groceries; with William Taliaferro for medical services rendered; and for the hire and sale of slaves. Papers include tax records for the payment of taxes by Mary S. Miller and family. Judicial records consist of a judgment, 1821, in the case of Francis Stubblefield vs. John S. Topping, Mary Ransone, and John Ransone for a forfeited bond. Promissory note, 1 Janaury 1849, is for the hire of a slave. Letters contain a letter, 15 February 1845, from O. S. Kemp to Mary S. Miller expressing concern that a slave of hers attempted to assault him and he fears for his property; a letter, 7 December 1859, from B. S. Hackney to (William) Shepherd Miller asking him to locate a house suitable for use as a boarding house; and a letter, 6 November 1865, from John D. Christian of Charles City County, Virginia, regarding clothes of Miller's, post-war conditions in Charles City County, and news of friends. Affidavit, March 1857, made by Mary S. Miller concerning military land bounties for her deceased first husband's (Robert Minor) service during the War of 1812. Contract, 5 October 1865, between J. A. Baytop and John Leigh for the rental of farm land to be paid for with crops
