Biographical or historical data
These records include recorded copies of patents for land issued by the English crown between 1623-1706 and 1710-1774. A few issued under the authority of the Virginia Company of London and presented for re-recording in order to affirm title are interspersed under their original dates. Following the introductory section noting the authority under which issuance was made are the name of the patentee, the description of the land, any reservations for the crown, and the date of issuance.

  • A donation from Mary Margaret Whipple to the Library of Virginia's Adopt-A-Book, Etc. program, in honor of Harrison and Margaret Hierth, has contributed to the conservation of Patents 16, 1735, an early land patent book containg records of land granted in Virginia by the royal governor
  • Patent books 1-14 are abstracted and indexed in Nell Nugent, Cavaliers and Pioneers, 3 vols. (Richmond, 1934, 1977, 1979)
  • These records are part of the Virginia Land Office record group (RG#4)
