Biographical or historical data
Peter Wellington Alexander, son of Peter and Mary Marks Alexander was born in Elbert County, Georgia on 21 March 1825. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1844, and was admitted to the bar the following year. Alexander practiced law in Savannah, and supplemented his income by writing articles for the Savannah Republican. He was appointed as a delegate to the state convention meeting in Milledgeville to discuss the issue of seccession in January 1861. Alexander became a war correspondent, and wrote nearly 800 dispatches from the scenes of the conflict for various Southern newspapers under the byline "P.W.A."
