  • Browne Junior Phelps was born in Topeka, Kansas on 22 September 1918. He was the son of Dr. Browne T. Phelps and Mollie Knoche. He graduated from Hopewell High School, and attended Roanoke College and Randolph-Macon College. Phelps served as a platoon sergeant with the 2750th Quartermaster Truck Company during World War II, and saw action in the Philippines. Following the war, he worked for the E. I. Dupont Company. He died on 15 July 2001.
  • His sister, Gladys K. Phelps, was born in Oswatomie, Kansas on 15 June 1915. She joined the U. S. Army in July 1943, and trained at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. She served with the Mayfair Detachment, Washington, DC, and then in Oberammergau and Bad Tolz, Germany. Phelps then assisted in the opening of the Women's Army Corps Training Center at Fort Lee, Virginia, and was the first woman to serve in the position of Sergeant Major at that facility. She later served in the Army Reserve. Gladys K. Phelps died in Fairfax, Virginia on 23 June 1993, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
