Biographical or historical data
Philip Henry Powers was born 10 April 1828 to William Powers and Alice Saunders Powers. He arrived in Clarke County, Virginia, from King and Queen County, Virginia, to teach and serve as a tutor. When the Civil War began he enlisted as a private in Company D, 1st Virginia Cavalry. He later was appointed sergeant-major of the 1st Virginia. Powers was appointed a major and quartermaster to Jeb Stuart's cavalry 6 March 1862, but resigned 5 June 1862 complaining of ill health. Powers returned to Clarke County where he taught and farmed. He married Roberta Mackey Smith (1831-1918) 28 December 1852, and they had nine children. Powers died 18 September 1887 in Clarke County and was buried in Green Hill Cemetery in Berryville, Virginia.
