Edward Sylvester Pierce was born on 13 December 1870 in Gates County, North Carolina. He attented Bethel Hill, Wake Forest College, and Louisville Seminary. Rev. Pierce held pastorates in Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Cumberland County, Virginia. He married 1) Ettie E. Puryear (1872-1915), and 2) Mary Cohn Knouss (1888-1976). Rev. Pierce was the father of nine children, including Robert Glenn Pierce (1908-1993). On 5 June 1923, Rev. Pierce was murdered at Cumberland Court House, Virginia. He is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk.
