Biographical or historical data
Providence Presbyterian Church, located in Gum Spring, Louisa County, Virginia, is the oldest Presbyterian Church in continual use in the commonwealth. Rev. John Todd was the first minister from 1752 to 1793. The congregation was nearly decimated by the Civil War, but was kept alive by one or two men and a few women. With the construction of Interstate 64, the area around Gum Spring began to attract new residents, and Providence increased its membership. In 1986, an educational building was constructed.
