Biographical or historical data
William Allan was born on 12 November 1837 near Winchester, Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Allan and Jane Dowdell George. He attended the University of Virginia, and afterwards was assistant to the principal at Bloomfield Academy in Loudoun County. During the Civil War, Allan served as a clerk in the quartermaster department, captain of artillery, and then chief of ordnance of the Second Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel by the end of the war. Following the war, he taught mathematics at Washington College (now Washington and Lee University). He wrote many books and articles on the Civil War. In 1873, Allan was elected the first principal of McDonough Institute near Baltimore, Maryland. He married Elizabeth Randolph Preston on 14 May 1874. William Allan died on 17 September 1889 and is buried in Garrison Forest Cemetery.
