The collection spans three generations of Massies, but the bulk of the papers document the operations of four large plantations and extensive slave force of William Massie (1795-1862). The records deal with Massie's plantation management, including slave management, agricultural and technological innovations, financial investments, crop marketing, and plantation provisioning
  • The William Massie collection consists of six series: 1) General correspondence, 1747, 1787-1865, containing personal and business correspondence and other papers including bills, receipts, accounts, legal papers, Tye River and Blue Ridge Turnpike Company papers, memoranda, small plats, and papers relating to Massie's positions as road commissioner and justice of the peace; 2) Oversize papers, 1781-1865, consisting of correspondence, deeds, plats of Massie's plantations, mill plans, a crop rotation plan, road plats, estate papers, and a plat drawn up for a court case; 3) Bound volumes, 1809-1865, consisting of 155 manuscript volumes containing subseries of daybooks, memorandum books, ledgers, cash books, letter books, weather memorandum books, stud books, estate account books, slave registers and account books, an arithmetic book, and a copy book; 4) Positive photostat-oversize papers, 1770-1854, consisting of deeds, plats of Massie's plantations, crop rotation schedules and architectural drawings
  • 5) Negative photostat-volumes, 1797-1888, contain 3 vols. of correspondence with letters, legal papers, bills, receipts, accounts, memoranda, and justice of the peace papers. Additional records include account books, plats of land, an estate inventory, crop memoranda, memorandum books, an orchard book, and a slave register with lists of taxable property; 6) Matthew Bryan correspondence, 1828-1882, including letters, promissory notes, accounts, and receipts, as well as information on the administration of Bryan's estate following his death
