John H. Wartmann (b. 1815) was publisher of the newspaper ROCKINGHAM REGISTER from 1838-1875. He also served as editor of VIRGINIA'S ADVOCATE, which was published during 1880 through 1881 in Charlottesville, Virginia. The company operated under the following names: J.H. Wartmann and Company, J.H. Wartmann and William G. Stevens, J.H. Wartmann and Maj. S.M. Yost, and Wartmann, Hern & Co. In 1822 Lawrence Wartmann had established the ROCKINGHAM REGISTER, which ceased operation in 1906.
