Mattie Phlegar Brown describes Greystone, a home they bought in Hendersonville which they operated as a retreat or camp for children in the summer, as well as other homes they lived in. She also recounts meeting James Hoge Tyler (1846-1925)

Biographical or historical data
Mattie Susan Phlegar was born 11 February 1872in Floyd County, Virginia, to Benjamin Phlegar (1812-1892) and Sarah Ellen Surface Phlegar (1832-1910). She attended local schools and Marion College, where she taught for a year after her graduation. Mattie Phlegar married Dr. Steven Brown 30 September 1896, and they had at least three children. The Browns resided in Salisbury, North Carolina. In 1906 they bought "Greystone" in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and operated it as a retreat for children to escape the sicklier regions. Mattie Phlegar Brown died 31 March 1968.
