Summary
  • Comprised of correspondence, newspaper and journal articles, court documents such as depositions and transcripts, and other papers pertaining to replevin activities that took place at the Virginia State Library
  • The material includes the court transcript of the trial of Larry I. Vass who was found to have stolen records from the Library during the 1960s and 1970s. The collection also contains information on the case of the County of Middlesex v. Jack Hamilton of Hamilton's Bookstore (1992), who was found to have been in possession of many documents, possibly public records. Testimony of several library employees is included, as are inventories of the documents in question. Isle of Wight County also filed suit against Hamilton for the return of several county records in 1993, and limited information on this case is available here as well
  • Other various replevin activities undertaken by the Virginia State Library are also documented in this collection. Most of the material is in the form of correspondence, some of which dates back to 1912 when a collection of Virginia public records was found to be for sale in New York. It was speculated that historian Benson J. Lossing raided the archives of valuable documents during the period before the fall of Richmond during the Civil War. His estate attempted to sell the documents privately after his death which attracted the attention of the Library. These documents include correspondence and newspaper articles
  • Additional replevin files dealing with the Middlesex County case can be found in Accession 38634. Additional information on the case of Virginia State Library v. Larry Ivan Vass can be found in Accession 40399
